Gandhi’s Charkha
In India, the word ‘charkha’ evokes images of spinning wheels—both large and small—and has come to symbolize not just a tool, but a legacy of resilience and self-reliance. Over time, the term has expanded to include driven-spindle wheels from other cultures, each with its own unique charm.
Curiosity has always been my compass, guiding me through the world of wool and spinning. Yet, it was a visit to the Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram Museum in Ahmedabad that truly shifted my perspective. Standing before Mahatma Gandhi’s charkha, I was struck by its simplicity and profound difference from the spinning tools I knew. There was something quietly powerful about it—a symbol of revolution, woven into wood and thread.
Inspired by Gandhi’s charkha and the centuries-old tradition of Rogan art, I created this painting—a tribute to the spinning wheel that changed a nation, and the craft that keeps heritage alive.
This Rogan Painting of Gandhi’s Charkha (Spinning Wheel) Masterpiece by Ashish Kansara
This exquisite wall piece showcases intricate designs created using a 1,550-year-old technique that originated in India. “Rogan” translates to “Rang Kaam” (work of color) in Sanskrit, highlighting the vibrant color combinations that define this art form. Born in 1975, Ashish Kansara has dedicated his life to mastering and preserving. Despite the challenges posed by declining demand for traditional crafts, he continues to demonstrate unwavering commitment to this ancient technique. Rogan art involves artisans creating intricate patterns on fabric using paint made from castor oil and natural pigments. Moreover, using a thin metal stylus, they draw freehand to produce stunning designs often inspired by nature, including birds, flowers, and trees. Thus, this masterpiece, originating from Madhapar, Kachchh, is now available for purchase online. We are the only authentic store for Rogan painting products, including sarees and lehengas.
