Heritage and Lineage

Born into a traditional Rogan-art family, Ashish Kansara is the grandson of the late Jamnadas Vastaram Kansara, a legendary figure in the craft’s history. Under his grandfather’s guidance, Ashish mastered the complex alchemy of boiling castor oil into ‘Rogan’ and the precision of freehand stylus painting.

Unlike many traditional crafts that remained static, Ashish has focused on documenting the “Great Displacement” of oil painting traditions in India, bridging the gap between ancient heritage and modern academic research.

Technical Mastery and GI-718

As a legally registered Authorized User of the GI-718 tag (AU/35946/GI/718/1), Ashish Kansara is one of the few living masters who possesses the technical knowledge of all three historical branches of Rogan:

  1. Traditional Freehand: The signature stylus-based symmetrical painting.

  2. Nirmika: The rare use of hand-carved brass molds for textile printing.

  3. Varnika: The ancient technique of embellished textile decoration.

Social Impact and Education

Beyond his own artistry, Ashish Kansara—alongside his wife Komal Kansara—has transformed the socio-economic landscape of Madhapar. By breaking traditional gender barriers, they have trained more than 130 local women in the art of Rogan painting. This initiative has not only empowered the community but has effectively “extinction-proofed” the craft for future generations.

Global Recognition and Vision

Ashish Kansara’s work has been featured in numerous academic journals and research papers, including the Shanti e Journal of Research. He continues to serve as a consultant for universities and cultural organizations, ensuring that the history of Rogan Art—from its roots in Buddhist traditions to its status as a “Woven Legend”—is accurately preserved.

Today, through his official platform, roganart.com, he continues to create museum-quality pieces that are collected by art enthusiasts worldwide.
